41st Anniversary Gala: United in Action

Each year Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California (AJSOCAL) hosts an Anniversary Dinner, which is a signature event that benefits AJSOCAL through the generous support of individuals, companies, and foundations.
The gala celebrates AJSOCAL’s accomplishments throughout the year and highlights its year-round programs and services. Additionally, we honor those who have made a significant impact on the community. The event includes elected officials, community partners, members of the Asian American bar associations and leaders from the arts, culture, and media as well as corporate, legal, and nonprofit sectors. It has become one of the most anticipated fundraising events in the Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
With a connection to past recent years, the theme is for this year’s gala is United in Action: 41st Anniversary.
The event is on October 10, 2024 from 6:30pm-9pm PT. Dress code is cocktail-attire. Please see below for parking information.
Vibiana is located in the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles at the Southeast corner of Main Street and 2nd Street. The Main Hall entrance is located at 214 South Main Street. There is complementary valet parking at the Vibiana.

2024 Public Image Honoree
The 2024 Public Image Award will be bestowed to veteran entertainment executive Fritz Friedman (he/him) for his decades-long commitment to celebrating AAPI representation. Award-winning actor Lou Diamond Phillips (he/him) will present Friedman with his award.
Friedman (he/him) is President of The Fritz Friedman Company, a production and strategic marketing communications company based in Los Angeles and San Diego. He is also a Commissioner for Arts and Culture for the City of San Diego and a Board Member of California Humanities. At Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, he held the position of Senior Vice President of Worldwide Publicity and Corporate Communications for two divisions: Sony Pictures Home Entertainment (SPHE) and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions. Friedman has a long history of philanthropic and civil rights activities, including lobbying efforts to help gain benefits for more than 18,000 Filipino Veterans of World War II. For this, the Philippine Government gave him a Presidential Citation, which President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo awarded at Malacanang Palace in Manila. He was also a member of the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs, Chair of the Vassar College Asian Pacific Islander Alumni Association, and the co-founder and President Emeritus of The Coalition of Asian Pacifics in Entertainment (CAPE), the largest entertainment organization for Asian Americans in the world.

2024 Joseph Ileto Courage Honoree
The gala this year commemorates the 25th Anniversary of the murder of Filipino American hate-crime victim Joseph Ileto, along with an in-memoriam tribute to his mother, Lillian Ileto, for her anti-violence advocacy. That tribute includes performances by actors/recording artists Jennifer Paz (she/her) and Anthony Fedorov (he/him). Mental health professional and LGBTQIA+ activist Eddy Gana (they/them), LCSW, will be receiving the 2024 Joseph Ileto Courage Award, which annually recognizes unsung heroes for exceptional courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Executive Director of Search to Involve Pilipino Americans (SIPA) Kimmy Maniquis (she/her/siya) and wife of the late Eric Swing, Ellen Rodgriguez Swing (she), will present Gana with their award.
Eddy M. Gana (they/them), LCSW 103797, is a second-generation Filipinx-American from Union City and based in Los Angeles, California. They graduated from UC Irvine with Psychology and Criminology, UCLAx with Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling, and USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work with a Master of Social Work and an emphasis on Child and Adolescent Mental Health. With experience in the home, school, and medical settings, they have provided 1:1 therapy, family counseling, support groups, Mental Health First Aid training, and coalition-building, as well as supervision for clinicians and interns as the Clinical Program Manager of Mental Health at Search to Involve Pilipino Americans. In 2024, they launched their private practice, Eddy Therapy. With the understanding that wellness is holistic and the arts are therapeutic, they are a poet of Steady and co-director/host of Sunday Jump, a community arts organization with the longest running Filipino-founded open mic series in Historic Filipinotown. Inspired by people’s stories, they believe in the therapeutic elements of self-expression for personal growth and greater social change.

2024 Public Image Presenter
Lou Diamond Phillips (he/him) starred in the FOX series “Prodigal Son,” having previously starred on the acclaimed Netflix series, “Longmire,” based on the Walt Longmire mystery novels by Craig Johnson. Other credits include NBC’s Quantum Leap, Amazon’s “Goliath,” FX’s “You’re the Worst,” CBS’ “Blue Bloods,” and recurring roles on Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and Netflix’s “The Ranch.” He received an Emmy nomination for “Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Drama or Comedy” for his roles in both Amazon’s “Conversations in LA” and History Channel’s “Crossroads of History.”
Recent film credits include DC’s Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, the Amblin feature “Easter Sunday,” Warner Brothers’ “The 33,” “Created Equal” directed by Bill Duke, and Sundance Festival favorite “Filly Brown,” for which he was named Best Actor at the Imagen Awards.
As a director, Phillips recently helmed episodes of CBS’s “All Rise”, FOX’s “The Cleaning Lady” and “Prodigal Son,” AMC’s hit series “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Longmire,” and ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Phillips is also an author. His novel “The Tinderbox: Soldier of Indira,” with illustrations by his wife Yvonne, was published in October 2020. He has co-written the screenplays for ‘Trespasses,’ and HBO’s ‘Dangerous Touch.’ He wrote the Miramax feature ‘Ambition.’ He produced his play ‘Burning Desire,’ a romantic comedy in two acts, which received its world premiere at The Seven Angels Theatre in Waterbury, Connecticut. Phillips was also asked by his good friend, novelist Craig Johnson, to write the forward to his collection of short stories ‘Wait For Signs.’
Originally born in the Philippines, Phillips was raised in Texas and is a graduate of University of Texas at Arlington with a BFA in Drama.

2024 Joseph Ileto Courage Presenter
Kimmy Maniquis (she/her/siya) is the Executive Director of SIPA and comes with a 25-year career serving youth. Her academic background in Ethnic Studies brought her to organizations where she led Filipino American Experiences classes and led racial justice and health equity work with youth. Kimmy has artistic roots as a dancer and choreographer with Kaba Modern, Culture Shock Oakland and LA. She lives in Long Beach with her partner Percy, their children Isagani and Elyas and is a former Ethics Commissioner for the City.

2024 Joseph Ileto Courage Presenter
Ellen Rodriguez-Swing (she) is a dedicated accountant, non-profit treasurer, and a Filipino American small business & professional community advocate with nearly two decades of experience in financial management. She earned her Master’s degree in Accounting and owns a business and tax solutions company called Framework Accounting.
As an accountant, Ellen has worked with a variety of business and nonprofit clients. Her expertise includes financial reporting based on US GAAP, tax planning, and budgeting. She has a keen eye for detail and is known for her ability to streamline financial processes and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Ellen is a committed Christ follower and is passionate about giving back to her community. She is actively involved in various nonprofit organizations. She currently sits as the President of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce of Cerritos (FAC3), Senior Director for Finance & Treasury of the Coalition of Filipino American Chambers of Commerce (COFACC), Board Member of Kalayaan Inc, and Chairman of the Board of the Pangasinan Brotherhood.

2024 Gala Performer
Jennifer Paz (she/her/hers) is an award-winning actor, writer, and producer whose notable credits include Miss Saigon, Flower Drum Song, Les Miserables, and is also known as the voice of Lapis Lazuli on the Emmy Award-winning, Peabody Award Winning, GLAAD MEDIA Award winning cult series Steven Universe. As a screenwriter, she won the 2021 Outstanding Screenplays TV Pilot competition for her original comedy Proud Marys for which she was subsequently awarded a Frank Young Fund Writers Residency Grant to develop as a musical. Proud Marys is an official selection for the National Alliance of Musical Theatre 36th Annual Festival of New Musicals and will be presented in New York City later this month (Oct. 24 & 25). She is a passionate advocate for women of color led initiatives, and stories that amplify mental health advocacy for young people.

2024 Gala Performer
Best known as Top 4th place finalist on Season Four’s American Idol (2005), Anthony Fedorov (he/him/his) has since found success as a songwriter, producer, and performer on the musical stage. His notable stage credits include RENT, and The Fantasticks both off-Broadway, as well as various regional and International productions in the title role of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and most recently Love Actually, LIVE! at the Wallis in Beverly Hills. As a songwriter, Anthony has written for artists including Britain’s Got Talent winner Jai McDowell (2011) and has numerous releases and song placements with frequent collaborator Latin Grammy® Award Winning producing partner Jeeve Ducornet. With a passion for social justice, Anthony Fedorov has written original commissioned songs for National Campaigns including “Our Story is One” for the BIC – Baha’i International Community, “Enough is Enough” for Moms Demand Action, and “The Power of a Girl” for The Mona Foundation. As a composer he has several musicals in development including Proud Marys and An Untitled Miserable Jets Fan Story with collaborator-wife Jennifer Paz. Both titles recently received development support with the prestigious Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Grove at Goodspeed Musicals (the birthplace of Annie, among many other beloved American musicals).

2024 Gala DJ
Gingee is a DJ/producer, percussionist and vocalist known for her unique take on global bass. Her work is a reflection of the sounds and cultures she has been exposed to growing up in Los Angeles as well as the musical world of her Filipino ancestors and beyond. Her productions incorporate the sounds of percussion instruments such as the kulintang (gongs native to the Philippines), kettle drum, and cowbells with rap and poetry. Her 2015 EP “Tambol” made waves in the global music community and she recently created a 4-part yearlong EP series released on every solstice and equinox.
She has performed at Coachella, South By Southwest, Malasimbo Festival, Grand Performances, Stern Grove, Magic Garage (an art and music festival she founded) and has been featured on KPFK, Red Bull Radio, BBC Radio, KXLU, LA Weekly, and KCET with releases on Party Time Society, Cassette Blog, Generation Bass, That Kind Of Music / Sony Red, and Moomba+.
