Anti-Asian Discrimination

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California works in conjunction with its community partners to assist AAPI individuals who are targets of discrimination based upon race, ethnicity, or national origin, particularly in the contexts of housing, employment, and consumer contracts. Services also include victim assistance. Advocates connect victims with non-legal services that address the emotional, physical and collateral fallout of discrimination.

Housing

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California helps with a variety of housing related issues, with a focus on those helping those who are immigrants or have limited proficiency with English. Tenants can receive assistance with eviction, landlord-tenant disputes, lease disputes, habitability, security deposit and other tenant rights. Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California also assists homeowners who are facing foreclosure for reasons other than missing monthly payments or who are victims of loan modification or home improvement scams.

Immigration

The Immigration Project at Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California assists immigrants nationally and locally who are seeking help with immigration relief such as adjustment of status, representation in immigration court, and other forms of family-based immigration. The Immigration Project hosts free in-house and off-site workshops and information sessions within Los Angeles County and Orange County to assist undocumented immigrants for little to no cost. Immigration consultations are also available in-person or over the phone by appointment only.

Citizenship

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California helps individuals with citizenship issues. With local partner organizations, Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California provides free citizenship assistance in Los Angeles and Orange counties, as well as across California and the nation. Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California collaborates with community-based groups to hold free citizenship workshops and also takes a limited number of citizenship cases at low or no cost.

Health access

We have staff dedicated to helping individuals gain access to affordable, quality healthcare. These advocates help community members with enrollment, language accessibility and knowledge about the healthcare system. This assistance is offered through our helplines and events such as workshops and clinics. During the pandemic, our services have included mobile COVID-19 vaccines clinics and community outreach.

Domestic Violence and Family Law

Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California assists low-income and limited-English-speaking survivors of domestic violence with family law and immigration services, including helping them obtain restraining orders, child custody, and support orders and to achieve legal status without the help of their abuser. Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California also assists victims of labor or sex trafficking with obtaining legal status.

Helplines in Asian Languages

The Asian Language Legal intake Project (ALLIP) provides toll-free hotlines in Chinese (Mandarin and Cantonese), Filipino (Tagalog), Hindi, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese (in 2021). The intake staff also provides assistance in English and other languages. Callers receive resources, counseling or referral to Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California attorney or other organization on issues including housing, domestic violence, family law, immigration, citizenship, and civil rights discrimination.
