Asian Americans Advancing Justice, a national affiliation of four independent civil rights organizations, issues the following statement:
“We commend the Senate for not allowing the original Department of Homeland Security (DHS) funding package to move forward as planned. However, it should not take multiple deaths on our streets at the hands of federal immigration enforcement officers to convince elected officials to rein in our unchecked immigration enforcement agencies.
“As negotiations continue in the days ahead, we call on Congress to cut funding for immigration enforcement and enact meaningful reforms that stop harmful and discriminatory enforcement and detention practices in communities. We urge Congress to stand with our communities and demand accountability.”
