Joseph Ileto was a Filipino American postal carrier who was shot and killed by an avowed white supremacist in 1999, shortly after the white supremacist shot five people at a Jewish community center in Los Angeles. AJSOCAL, along with Filipino community groups, assisted the Ileto family with emotional, financial, and legal needs. AJSOCAL also worked with the Ileto family as they continued to publicly speak out across the country on the need for anti-hate crime legislation, gun control laws, and resources to address race relations against racial minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those of diverse religious backgrounds since the day their son and brother was killed because of his race.
